The Rhino

Rhino Foundation
Rhino extinction levels vary by species and subspecies, ranging from vulnerable to functionally extinct, with total global wild numbers sitting at roughly 27,000 to 28,000 animals.

IUCN Red List Status by Species

Northern White Rhino: Functionally Extinct (only two females remain alive).
Javan Rhino: Critically Endangered (around 50 individuals remain in one Indonesian national park).
Sumatran Rhino: Critically Endangered (only 34 to 47 individuals left in isolated groups).
Black Rhino: Critically Endangered, though populations have grown to about 6,788 following intense conservation.
Southern White Rhino: Near Threatened to Endangered trends, with roughly 15,752 animals remaining in Africa.
Greater One-Horned (Indian) Rhino: Vulnerable, representing a conservation success story with over 4,000 individuals.

Core Drivers of Decline

Poaching Crisis: High black-market demand for rhino horn—driven by traditional medicine myths and status symbols—fuels relentless illegal hunting.
Habitat Fragmentation: Expanding human settlements, agriculture, and infrastructure reduce available grazing land and isolate wild groups.
Conflict and Instability: Civil unrest and weak law enforcement in range countries create lawless pockets where criminal poaching syndicates operate freely.
